Every soul waiting in a shelter should have something soft of their own. We bring new fleece blankets and stuffed animals to shelters around the Greater Richmond area and Hampton Roads, so the waiting is a bit less lonely.
One tail waggle at a time!
No soul should wait for a home with nothing of their own.
Something warm, something soft, something that's theirs.
Why a blanket matters
A dog who lands in a shelter has usually lost everything at once. Her home. Her people. The routine she knew, and any sense that the world is safe. Then she's put in a kennel she doesn't understand, next to a lot of other frightened dogs.
A blanket doesn't fix any of that. But it's warm, it takes the edge off a concrete floor, and after a night or two it smells like her instead of like the shelter. The stuffed animal is something to hold on to. Between them she's got one corner of the world that's hers, while the rest of it gets sorted out.
We buy them new and in bulk, and take donated ones too. Everything has to survive shelter life and a commercial washer, so nothing fancy.
Straight to shelters and rescues around the Greater Richmond area and Hampton Roads. It never costs them anything.
When she gets adopted the blanket goes with her. One thing that smells right on a very strange day.
Nobody ends up in a shelter on purpose. And not one of them knows why they're there, or how long it'll be.
We can't take them home. We can keep them warm until somebody else does.
